The Teofilo four-year-old was last seen running a disappointing eighth to Zabisco in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) at Sandown on November 15 after he got planted three wide and had too much work to do early.

Before that luckless run the gelding was a first-up winner in the Listed Sale Cup (1600m) off a five month break that followed his brave Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) win at Eagle Farm last June.

Sonntag was on fire during his three-year-old autumn – winter campaign with wins at Sale and Caulfield before his Derby triumph.

Having won four of his 10 starts in total to date the galloper, purchased for $58,000 from the 2013 William Inglis & Son August Thoroughbred Sale, has won close to $485,000 in prize money.

He’ll be given the chance to add another Group 1 win to his record this preparation including in the $400,000 Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 14 having returned to work in good order.

“He’s come back well,” Dwyer told TVN’s Racing Ahead.

The CF Orr will be the starting point of a campaign targeting a much tougher assignment, the $1.6 million Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick on April 11.

Dwyer also has one or two other Victorian races after the Orr Stakes in mind for his exciting youngster before the trip to Sydney.

Once there he will go into the Sydney Cup via the $150,000 Group 3 Sky High Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 14 and then possibly into the $1.5 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at the same track on March 28.

Early Sydney Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au have Signoff and Who Shot Thebarman installed as the dual $7 favourites.

Sonntag is also listed in the futures Sydney Cup odds for the two mile classic paying $21 to win.
