2015 Carrington Stakes Field & Barrier Draw – Spurtonic Out Wide

The final field for the Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) was released on Wednesday morning, with 12 horses accepting for the sprint-mile race at Royal Randwick Racecourse this Saturday.

Headlining the field is Gai Waterhouse’s Spurtonic, who is using the race as a lead-up to the $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 4. He is due to start from the second-widest gate and carry the top weight of 59kg with Blake Shinn to ride.

The five-year-old gelding is a last start winner of the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 10, which he managed to win from barrier ten, so his chances aren’t lost yet.

Hugh Bowman rode Spurtonic to success in the Magic Millions Cup but will instead ride That’s A Good Idea in the 2015 Carrington Stakes.

The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained gelding will also jump wide from barrier ten, in the gate next to Spurtonic. That’s A Good Idea was a fast finishing runner-up of the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) last time out, missing out to Ball Of Muscle by a nose.

Chris Waller continues to lead the charge after accepting with all three of his nominated horses – Heart Testa, She’s Clean, and Eigelstein.

Five-year-old gelding Heart Testa finished third in the Listed Ladies Day Cup (1400m) as well as winning the Kingswood Park Handicap (1350m) in November but finished last in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) two starts ago. The gelding will jump from barrier five with Jason Collett to ride while six-year-old mare She’s Clean will be one gate over with Kerrin McEvoy as hoop.

Eigelstein will need to overcome a start from the widest gate. The Seven-year-old gelding has yet to be appointed a jockey.

Team HawkesNinth Legion will enjoy the inside run from barrier one with James McDonald due to ride.

The five-year-old gelding enjoyed minor success during the spring after placing in both the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) before running a solid fourth in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 4. He will make his return in the 2015 Carrington Stakes on Saturday before a busy autumn campaign.

The Benjamin Smith-trained Testarhythm will jump from barrier four, December Handicap (1550m) runner-up Scream Machine will jump from barrier nine, and Fred Cowell’s Mighty Lucky will get a good start from barrier two.
