Spurtonic Leads 2015 Carrington Stakes Nominations

The Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) is one of two black-type races running at Royal Randwick Racecourse this Saturday, with 13 sprint-milers nominated for the race on Monday morning.

Chris Waller once again leads the charge with three potential runners – Eigelstein, Heart Testa, and She’s Clean.

Seven-year-old Eigelstein is set to make his Australian black-type race debut should he accept on Wednesday despite finishing last in the Tab Place Multi Handicap (1400m) on January 10, his first start in over four months.

Waller’s chances at a win seem much more likely with either of the other two potential runners.

Heart Testa finished third in the Listed Ladies Day Cup (1400m) at Hawkesbury back in November before winning the Kingswood Handicap (1350m) just ten days later. However the five-year-old gelding was beaten by a long margin in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) on November 29, finishing last of all 13 runners.

The following month the gelding had a very good run in the Listed Canterbury Classic, finishing just half a length away from Dothraki in fourth place.

She’s Clean had a lackluster spring carnival, finishing middle of the field in all three Group races against tougher competition than the mare was used to.

When she stepped down in class over the summer however, the five-year-old mare finished runner-up in a Benchmark 90 before winning a Benchmark 95.

Despite his dominance, it is not Waller that has the highest hated horses in the 2015 Carrington Stakes but Gai Watehouse with Spurtonic.

The five-year-old gelding is a last-start winner of the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 10, pocketing a cool $229,200 for his connections. After finishing last in the Group 3 Liverpool Cup (1300m) last two starts previously, the gelding delivered a surprise win for Waterhouse.

Other notable horses that could line-up at Randwick Racecourse on Saturday include John O’Shea’s Haussman, December Handicap (1550m) runner-up Scream Machine, the Benjamin Smith-trained Testarhythm, and Listed Takeover Target Stakes second That’s A Good Idea.
