Group 2 Winners Head 2015 Manfred Stakes Nominations

Two Group 2 winners feature among the list of Manfred Stakes 2015 nominations taken for Sandown Racecourse’s Australia Day meeting in Melbourne on Monday with Moonovermanhattan and Petrology both possible runners.

The headline race on the Sandown race card this January 26, the $150,000 Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1300m) attracted 16 nominations.

One of the top performers in the mix is the Mick Price-trained Manhattan Rain colt Moonovermanhattan who won the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) last October.

He also had two Group 1 runs during the spring when seventh in the Caulfield Guineas and a disappointing 12th when failing to see out the distance last start in the Victoria Derby over 2500m.

A horse that runs well fresh he will be resuming if accepted on Saturday and the 1300m should suit first-up.

The other Group 2 winner nominated is then the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Fastnet Rock colt Petrology.

A winner of three of his nine starts to date, back in November he won two on the trot before being turned out for a spell ahead of his autumn return.

He won a Listed 1800m race at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival and then went to Sandown, where he will be returning this long weekend, to beat home Stratum Star by over two lengths in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) last time out.

Coming off more recent standout form meanwhile are first and second over the line in the VOBIS Gold Carat (1200m) last time out, Fast Cash and Tudor.

Wendy Kelly’s Charge Forward gelding won the race first-up after good spring form that included a second behind Rich Enuff in the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) in August, while Tudor ran second in his first run since October.

Also coming off a win are the likes of Peter Moody’s impressive Hard Spun gelding San Nicasio who won at Moonee Valley on December 27, the Tony McEvoy-trained Caulfield winner back in July Affirmation and Java who won at the Sandown track over 1200m on January 7.

Also worth a note is the up-and-coming Chris Waller-trained Bascule who boasts three wins, a second and a third from five starts to date, and Sandown Guineas third placegetter Berisha.

See below for the full Manfred Stakes 2015 nominations, the field and barriers out on Thursday.
