Top Sydney trainer Chris Waller is set to saddle two horses in the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday but the two couldn’t be more different.
Waller nominated both Multilateral and Permit for the final summer stayers feature and the pair are two of twelve potential starters.
Six-year-old gelding Multilateral missed out on the Summer Cup (2000m) on December 26 but won the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m) just one week later on January 1, both of which ran at Randwick.
Multilateral then missed out on a placing in the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) on January 9 by less than half a length but the 2400 metres of the 2015 Australia Day Cup is a much more ideal distance for the gelding.
“Multilateral gets back to 2400 metres which should suit him better than Gosford which he found too short,” Waller told Sky Racing.
“The Australia Day Cup is a race which should suit him and also Permit.”
Eight-year-old gelding Permit meanwhile while try to recapture his form of old in the Australia Day Cup after finishing outside the placings in all three of his past starts.
The gelding won both the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) and Tattersalls Club Cup last summer but failed to defend either of his titles this campaign.
After running third in the Cellarbrations@Valentine Handicap (1900m) on November 15, Permit finished midfield in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m). He then finished dead last in the Christmas Cup after walking up the straight of the rain-affected track before running fourth to Multilateral in the Tattersalls Club Cup after flattening out late.
Both horses will be partnered with their last-start jockeys.
“Hugh Bowman rode Permit in the trial and will be on in the race while Glyn Schofield rides Multilateral again,” Waller said.
