Peter Moody’s multiple Group 1 winner Moment Of Change is one of the headline nominees entered for the WJ Adams Stakes 2015 at Sandown Racecourse this Monday.
The Barley A Moment six-year-old failed to win in the spring but was on fire last Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival including his Group 1 CF Orr Stakes – Futurity Stakes double over the 1400m at Caulfield 12 months ago.
This time last year Moment Of Change kicked off his autumn campaign with a close second to Richie’s Vibe in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
He is again nominated for the Australia Stakes, run on Saturday as well as the $120,000 Listed WJ Adams Stakes (1000m) two days later but could also be saved and go first-up into the CF Orr Stakes next month.
The other headline WJ Adams Stakes nominee for this Australia Day long weekend is then Robert Smerdon’s Dubawi mare Shamal Wind.
She won this race first-up last February from the outside barrier 13 of 13 draw and is back to defend her title in 2015 off the back of a consistent spring that finished with four third place finishes on the trot.
The form horse coming into the race though is the Robbie Griffiths-trained four-year-old The Quarterback.
The Street Boss gelding has won his past two on the trot over the 1000m at Flemington including the Listed Kensington Stakes from January 10 where he saluted as the $2.45 favourite.
While yet to race at Sandown, The Quarterback does have a top record over the distance with two wins and a third from three starts.
Also coming via a nice run in the Kensington Stakes are runner-up Sumakaray and third past-the-post Hard Stride.
The Brian Cox-trained Manner Hill mare Sumakaray improved on her string of poor runs in the Kensington Stakes appreciating the 1000m that she’s won two of her four starts over.
Hard Stride meanwhile was first-up in the race not having raced since his strong August at Caulfield that included a win in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) over the heavily-weighted Moment Of Change (62kg) and his third to Flamberge in the Group 3 The Heath 1100 (1100m).
Other notable WJ Adams Stakes hopes this year include in-form Dane Shadow four-year-old Trevinder up in class for this and last start winner Sweet Emily who holds the Moonee Valley 1000m track record.
