Red Excitement Wins 2015 Chester Manifold Stakes

Gerald Ryan’s Red Excitement justified his favouritism in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday, winning his fifth straight start.

Red Excitement won three handicap races this time last year before a tendon injury saw the gelding spelled for ten months. He returned to win the Drummond Golf Handicap (1400m) on December 20 before the Chester Manifold Stakes on Saturday, proving he is well and truly back in form.

While the gelding had drifted from $3.30 to $4 favourite at prior to the race, he still managed to bring home the race half a head from Tried And Tired with Whisper Downs a half-neck behind in third.

“He’s not the easiest horse to ride but every time he goes to the races you know he’s going to try his guts out for you and as a jockey that’s all you can ask for,” hoop Brenton Avdulla told Sky Racing following the race.

According to Ryan there is nothing left for Red Excitement in Sydney, who has become weighted out of handicap races and will need to step up to weight-for-age races.

The trainer will return to Melbourne with the gelding next month, with a tilt in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 14 likely on the cards.

“If there was a (suitable) race in Sydney for him I’d stay in Sydney, but I don’t think there is. And why not have a crack,” Ryan said.

“I might have to step to something like the CF Orr because he’s won with 58.5 kg, and he’s been carrying big weights.

“He’s got two runs under his belt and the better horses will be fresh.”

Ryan also pinpointed the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 14 as his long term target.

“He’s honest, he tries hard and he knows where the winning line is. He gets his head down and he has a dig,” he said.

“He’s no star, but he knows where the post is.”
