2015 Blue Diamond Preview Unlikely for Parcel

While a nomination for the Blue Diamond Fillies Preview 2015 at Sandown Racecourse will be thrown in for undefeated filly Parcel this Australia Day, trainer Wez Hunter is more likely to save her for an easier assignment at Moonee Valley.

The two-year-old daughter of Beneteau debuted at Bendigo on December 21 and enjoyed a solid three-quarter length win in a juvenile’s maiden run over 900m with Chris Parnham in the saddle.

The filly is nominated for the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse on February 28 with her Mornington-based trainer now plotting a path towards that Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival major.

Two divisions of the Listed $120,000 Blue Diamond Previews play out at Sandown this Saturday, one for the fillies and one for the colts and geldings.

Hunter originally had the fillies’ edition next Monday, January 26, in mind for Parcel after her win on debut, where she broke Innovation Girl’s 900m record at the track.

He is now however looking instead at a $35,000 race at Moonee Valley on Friday January 30 as her next Blue Diamond lead-up.

“I’ll nominate her for the Blue Diamond Preview, but I’m leaning towards running her at Moonee Valley,” he told TVN on Monday morning.

“It’s a little bit softer option, then I can run her in the Blue Diamond Prelude.”

The $150,000 Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) runs at Caulfield on February 14.

Hunter will be saddling up his second Blue Diamond Stakes hope in as many years following the run of Malaguerra last autumn, the Magnus colt having finished four lengths away 10th to the winning filly Earthquake.

When asked to compare Malaguerra to his Blue Diamond Stakes hope this year, he rates Parcel a far better youngster.

Futures Blue Diamond Stakes betting is now open at bookmakers around the country including Ladbrokes.com.au with Robert Smerdon’s Inglis 2YO Banner winner Fontiton leading the way at around $4.60.

Parcel meanwhile can be found much further down the all-in Blue Diamond Stakes odds at about $51, a price sure to firm some if she can win her next assignment.

2015 Blue Diamond Stakes third declarations close at 12 noon on Tuesday January 27 at a cost of $660 to connections.
