Apprentice jockey Patrick Moloney will have his hands full this Saturday as he saddles horses in eight of the nine races at the Flemington meeting.
While the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) is by far the most important race of the day, Moloney will undoubtedly be most excited for the preceding race – the Birdcage Handicap (1000m) – in which he’ll wear the royal blue coloured silks for Godolphin for the very first time.
Moloney will partner Hebden in the 2015 Birdcage Handicap, one of 15 sprinters tackling the famous Flemington straight.
The pair will jump from barrier five and Moloney is sure to claim against the filly’s 57.5kg weight allocation.
“It’s a huge opportunity for a young apprentice like myself,” Moloney told Sky Racing of his first ride for Godolphin.
“If everything falls into place and I do the right thing by them, hopefully more opportunities come my way from them because they have got a lot of quality horses.”
Hebden is an $8 hopeful in the Birdcage betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, on the fourth line of betting behind favourite Simply You ($4.80).
The Exceed And Excel filly has finished in the first three in all three of her career starts to date. She debuted at Hawkesbury on December 14 in a maiden over 1100m. The filly began well from a wide barrier and soon crossed to settle in fourth place with ease, one out and one back. She moved up well on rounding the home turn, easily taking the lead with 200 metres to go and went on to win by over one length.
Hebden also won the Testa Rossa @ Vinery Handicap (1100m) before finishing third in the Tab Rewards Handicap (1200m) on January 7.
