Since the odds went live for the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) yesterday afternoon, the betting market has seen its share of movement.
13 sprint-milers are set to contest the $120,000 feature race at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday. Five horses are offering single figure odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by Red Excitement.
The Gerald Ryan-trained gelding opened as $4.60 favourite but the market mover has already seen his price shorten to $3.80.
Red Excitement was in a great bit of form at the beginning of last year, winning three consecutive races and placing in a further two. Yet after winning the Eatability Handicap (1600m) on the back of the February Handicap (1400m) and Gardenia Handicap (1400m), the gelding suffered a bowed tendon injury that saw him sidelined ten months – missing both autumn and spring carnivals.
He made a strong return to racing in the Drummond Golf Handicap (1400m) on December 20, just having enough to hit the line and score a head in front of Burbero.
Red Excitement will need to overcome a wide start from barrier 12 but Ryan is confident the runner can win from any barrier.
Other horses that have seen their odds change over the past 24 hours include Whisper Downs ($61 into $51), Reparations ($6 into $7), Aeronautical ($17 into $19), and Decircles ($10 into $12). As you can see, all but one have seen their support wane.
David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Whisper Downs will jump from barrier eight with Michael Walker to ride. The gelding has won two of his four starts at Flemington and has plenty of experience over 1400 metres (13:3-2-1).
Whisper Downs has not placed in his past twelve starts. His last finish in the money was back in November 2013 when he finished third in the Kyneton Cup (2000m).
Reparations turned around an end of the field run in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) to win the Listed MSS Security Sprint (1200m) during the spring and finish third in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) on January 1. However his campaign is lighter than the majority of the field and he will carry the sole top weight of 60kg – five kilograms more than he won with in November.
Danny O’Brien’s Decircles is a last start winner of the Standish Handicap, having already beaten home five of his rivals, and will get an ideal start from barrier three. Still the gelding has seen his price drift out to double figures, perhaps because he has only won one of his seven starts over 1400 metres.
The Lionel Cohen-trained Aeronautical will get his first 1400 metre start in nearly two years but Cohen is confident he’ll relish the distance after finishing midfield in both the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) and Standish Handicap.
