13 classy horses accepted for the $120,000 race at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday, giving punters a variety of betting prospects and chances to back a winner.
Gerald Ryan’s Red Excitement opened the market as $4.60 favourite despite drawing the second widest barrier. The five-year-old gelding is one of four last start winners in the field after taking out the Drummond Golf Handicap (1400m) on December 20.
Red Excitement found the front straight from the jump to control the race nicely. He led by a length 500 metres out and put two lengths on his rivals with 250 metres to go. He just had enough on the line to score a head in front of Burbero.
The gelding did well on his return to racing for the first time in ten months after he was spelled due to injury following a win in the Eatability Handicap (1600m) in February last year.
Red Excitement has won five of his eight starts over 1400 metres and placed in another two.
The Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Tried And Tired has scored the inside jump from barrier one with Damien Oliver in the saddle. The gelding is a last start winner of the Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m), beating home rivals Lord Of The Sky, Go The Knuckle, and Anlon. His track and distance record is one win and one place from four starts.
Reparations will carry the top weight in the 2015 Chester Manifold Stakes, having been competitive in a number of black-type races in the past couple of years. The Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained gelding was disappointing in the Group 1 Stradbroke (1400m) last June, finishing 15th of 18, however is in good form following a win and minor placing this campaign.
The gelding was third in the Listed MSS Security Sprint (1200m) on Melbourne Cup Day before finishing third in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) on January 1. The sprinter may struggle over the 1400 metres, having won just three of his 12 starts at the distance.
Robbie Laing’s Lord Of The Sky will jump from barrier six with Patrick Moloney in the saddle. The horse has finished runner-up his past two times out in the Christmas Stakes and Standish Handicap, missing out to Chester Manifold rivals both times. The horse has yet to be tested over 1400 metres.
Boristar has finished in the first two his past four times out, which includes winning the Listed Christmas Handicap (1400m) in Adelaide on December 26. He has placed in all seven of his starts over 1400 metres but will be tested on just his second outing at Flemington.
The John MacMillan-trained gelding will jump from barrier nine with Ms Jamie Kah to ride. His price has already shortened to $7.50 from $8 since the market opened a short time ago.
