Four-year-old gelding Real Time is set to have a lucrative career following his win in the Magic Millions Class 6 Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
Real Time has won four of his seven career starts to date but his 2015 Magic Millions win is by far his biggest accomplishment – pocketing $57,000 of the $100,000 total prize money.
Class 6 Plate second-favourite Architect swept to the lead early in Saturday’s race and maintained a strong lead by several lengths at the 200 metre mark. The David Lawlor-trained gelding looked the winner before Real Time delivered a late burst of speed to mow him down in the final 50 metres, winning three quarters of a length clear.
Trainer Robert Smerdon is confident the Magic Millions win is just the beginning of a successful future for Real Time
“We have a very high opinion of this horse,” he told Sky Racing.
“The original plan was to take him to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions Trophy but he would have been very badly weighted against open company horses.
“He would have at least run a place and he would have gone up sharply in the ratings. Then he would have been weighted out of some races.
“It was better to run in the Plate where he got in very well at the weights and his rating won’t soar for the win.”
While a tilt in the Brisbane Winter Carnival was on the cards, Real Time will instead return to Melbourne and prepare for a spring campaign.
“I suppose we could be back in Queensland for the winter but it might not fit in with his schedule time wise,” Smerdon said.
Real Time’s owner Gerry Harvey will obviously be celebrating the fact that the gelding was passed in at $120,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions yearling sale.
