David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s undefeated filly Wawail has trialled well this week ahead of her autumn return where she will target the 2015 Australian Guineas at Flemington Racecourse.
The three-year-old daughter of Lonhro has had three runs for three wins to date, most recently in black-type company.
She was last seen at Sandown-Hillside on November 15 with Michael Walker aboard where she won the Listed City Of Greater Dandenong Stakes (1400m) by a neck over Wine Tales.
In her first official trial since, on Monday she raced at Tatura in an 850m hit-out for three-year-old fillies where, with Walker in the saddle again, she beat home Sierra Gypsy by a length on the Soft (7) rated track.
Walker had her sitting wide before moving her up from the 400m when she quickly accelerated to put a gap on the rest of the trial runners, Wawail casually going over the line without too much of a stretch.
That effort has co-trainer Hayes confident in her ability to come on this season where she’ll be stepped up to elite level company in the $500,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on Marcy 7.
“She did what we wanted her to do,” Hayes told TVN after the jump-out.
The team are now looking at a resuming run at Flemington on January 31 in a race against her own kind before either returning there or heading to Caulfield for her second-up run.
She’ll tackle the boys in the Australian Guineas then third-up where she should be ready to peak when stepped up over the mile.
Hayes holds the Australian Guineas training record since 1983 with three wins from 19 runners in the three-year-olds’ classic, also preparing two runners-up and three third placegetters.
His latest winner was with the 6/4 favourite Miss Finland back in 2007.
Also looking at an Australian Guineas campaign during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival is the Barry Campbell-trained Admiral who won the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) at Hobart on Sunday.
