Unable to find a suitable next-up option at home in Sydney, Rosehill-based trainer Gerald Ryan will travel his flying galloper Red Excitement to Melbourne this weekend for a run in the Chester Manifold Stakes 2015 at Flemington Racecourse.
The five-year-old Excites gelding is a confirmed acceptor after being one of 17 nominations taken by Racing Victoria for this weekend’s $120,000 Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m), which is the country’s only black-type on Saturday.
Red Excitement won three on the trot in January and February last year in Sydney before spending nearly 11 months on the sidelines with a tendon injury that saw him spend lots of time on the water-walker as part of his rehabilitation.
He returned at Rosehill on December 20 to carry a hefty 61kg to victory in the $85,000 Drummond Golf Handicap (1400m).
It was a controlled all-the-way effort that impressed Ryan, Red Excitement holding on to win after they closed in on his two length lead over the final 250m to leave only a neck between him and the runner-up Burbero.
“His first-up run was very good with 61kg on his back and he’s gone on from it. His work since has been very good,” Ryan told TVN on Monday.
Jockey Brenton Avdulla was aboard for the first-up victory at Rosehill and retains the ride for the Chester Manifold on the weekend with his mount shooting for a maiden stakes win.
Red Excitements will be having his first Melbourne run since a sixth in the Inglis 2YO Banner (1000m) back in October 2011 when prepared in Canberra by his original trainer Neville Layt.
Ryan though has confidence it is the right race with the horse a specialist over the 1400m having won five of his seven starts over the distance.
“There was nothing for him in Sydney and the Chester Manifold looks a nice race for him,” he said.
Other notable Chester Manifold Stakes 2015 nominations include the first three over the line in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) at the track from New Year’s Day – Decircles (1st), Lord Of The Sky (2nd) and Reparations (3rd).
The field will be out on Wednesday and published right here so stay tuned.
