Ragazzo Del Corsa Heading to 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes

After winning his maiden at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday, two-year-old colt Ragazzo Del Corsa will line-up in the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 28 against the likes of Fontiton and Secret Agenda.

The Danny O’Brien-trained Ragazzo De Corsa won the Better Beyond Plate (1000m) on Saturday two lengths clear of runner-up Helsingor while Make Her Own Whey was a further length and a quarter away in third.

He got forward after jumping from the widest barrier, finding himself wide without cover but caught up with the leaders at the 400 metre mark before hitting the front soon after. He then went away from them pretty easily on the line to win running away. He then went away from them pretty easily on the line to win running away.

The win came just one month after finishing third to Secret Agenda on debut at Moonee Valley and part-owner Brian Blood was thrilled.

“We have been hoping that he will make a Diamond colt and he’s heading in the right direction,” Blood told Racing Victoria.

“This was a vastly improved effort on his Moonee Valley run.”

2015 Blue Diamond Stakes favourite Fontiton meanwhile is likely to jumpout at Sandown on Tuesday morning.

Trainer Robert Smerdon favours a jumpout over an 800 metre 2YO trial later in the morning.

“She might have a jumpout as she won’t go for the half-mile (800m), she’ll probably just go 600 metres,” Smerdon said.

Fontiton is tipped to be the Blue Diamond Stakes favourite following an easy six length debut victory in the Inglis Banner (1000m) at Moonee Valley on October 25. The filly drove along the inside to lead with ease after jumping from barrier one. She held together at the turn before exploding away for a fantastic win.

The Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Sandown on January 26 is the likely next start for Fontiton as she kick-starts her preparation for the $1 million feature race one month later.

“We’re looking at the Preview — we’ll see how she progresses the next two weeks,” Smerdon said.

“She’ll tell us by her work whether we kick off there or later.”
