After winning the Magic Millions Stayers Cup (1800m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday, Rex Lipp’s plans to take Tinto to Sydney for the autumn carnival have strengthened.
Despite carrying the top weight of 59kg and jumping from the widest barrier, Tinto won the $200,000 race with ease.
“It wasn’t the greatest field at the Gold Coast on Saturday but she put them away like the class horse I know she is,” Lipp told Sky Racing.
The 2015 Magic Millions Stayers Cup capped a successful summer campaign for the four-year-old, who will now head to the spelling paddock.
Tinto finished runner-up in the Listed Travel Associates Classic (1200m) first up at Doomben Racecourse on November 29 before taking out a minor placing in the Listed Just Now Quality (1350m) a fortnight later. The mare also won the Listed Bernborough Stakes (1625m) on the final day of the year, completing all of Lipp’s summer goals.
Tentative autumn plans have been mapped out for Tinto, who could run in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) first-up at Rosehill Gardens on March 14.
While nothing is set in stone, Lipp is sure her first start of the season will be in Sydney.
“If she does need another run it will be in Sydney. There are plenty of lead-in races for her,” he said.
“There are a couple of options after the Coolmore. One is the Doncaster which should suit her very well.”
Tinto is a proven stayer after winning the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) during the Brisbane Winter Carnival last year but will likely be kept over 1500-2000 metres in the autumn.
The Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m), running at Royal Randwick on April 4, will carry a total prizepool of $3 million.
“We have had a lot of fun with this mare but I am certain the best is yet to come,” Lipp concluded.
