2015 Magic Millions 2YO Classic Winner Le Chef Scores Bonus

Owner Lenore Saunders was left speechless after the Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2015 result on the Gold Coast today with her Darryl Hansen-trained juvenile Le Chef winning not only the big $1.64 million first prize but also the $325,000 bonus as an all-female owned champion in the race.

Coming off back-to-back wins firstly at Ipswich and then the Gold Coast over the track and distance last Saturday, Mt Isa-owned Exceed And Excel gelding from the Sunshine Coast Le Chef ($15) handled the seven day turnaround and step up in class without issue in this year’s $2 million Jeep Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).

Gun young apprentice Luke Tarrant retained the ride and gave the up-and-coming galloper the ideal ride from barrier three in the Classic, the horse getting the gap on the straight to beat home a brave outsider Pepperano ($61) by three quarters of a length with Nick Olive’s Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic third placed filly Single Gaze ($10) just under a length further away in third.

Full credit to the winning horse, but it was also a cheekily run race from second past the post Pepperano from Liam Birchely’s Brisbane stables.

The Court Command filly was passed in for $1,000 at the MM Sales only to win on debut at Doomben last November, run fourth at Toowoomba on New Year’s Eve in the Magic Millions Plate before her second in the Classic.

Her connections also cleaned up then taking our $150,000 for second plus also enjoying the all-female-owner bonus of $100,000 for second.

After the barriers went up it was the Gai Waterhouse-trained Magic Millions Clockwise Classic winner from Ballarat in November Carriages moving across from the outside barrier to take up the lead.

She sat up front ahead of eventual last over the line Miss Idyllic with Toowoomba Magic Millions winner Frequendly in third and Le Chef settled into fourth on the inside by rising talent Tarrant, who currently leads the Queensland jockey premiership.

Once on the straight Carriages was still in front with 300m left to travel, race favourite Wicked Intent working his way from the back down the outside only to finish two lengths away sixth in the finish.

It was Le Chef who stole the show however thanks to a well-timed run having sat one out and one back in the box seat travelling lovely, Tarrant biding his time, to hold off the enormous run from Pepparano who was caught four deep early before making up lots of late ground.

“I just want to show I don’t need my claim to ride winners,” Tarrant, who also won the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) aboard the Helen Page-trained Rudy back on December 13, said after the big win.

“To me it’s all about that.

“I’m happy to have the opportunity to ride the horse.

“It’s a pleasure just to ride with the guys (star senior jockeys) and I’m appreciating every moment of it.

“He’s just a lovely horse.

“Darryl’s just done a pearler of a job with him…thrown the blinkers on him and he’s just improved every run from then on.”

An ecstatic Hansen was quick to throw the praise right back to Tarrant.

“He’s a superstar mate, a superstar,” he told the media.

“The last few weeks have been trying. Tough getting this horse here.

“He’s copped it all in his stride.

“I’m over the moon. I’ve never experienced anything like this. It’s brilliant.”

Saunders was also left in shock after her huge win but said they were always confident.

“Mt Isa rules!” she said.

“We travel everywhere but of course, you don’t show up if you’re not confident.”

There’s still time to win shares in a Peter Moody-trained filly this Magic Millions Day by placing a minimum $5 wager on any of the remaining Gold Coast races through our No. 1 recommended bookie Ladbrokes.com.au now!
