Today the 2015 Gosford Cup takes place in New South Wales with the exclusive Races.com.au tips on the handicap clash detailed below.
There are 10 stayers in the mix for this year’s $150,000 Listed Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) that runs as Race 6 at 6:05pm (AEDT).
Of the gallopers facing off in this year’s race the clear favourite in the Gosford Gold Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3 for the win is the rails-drawn top weight Pelicano carrying 59kg from gate one with Hugh Bowman in the saddle.
Tony McEvoy’s Court Of Jewels six-year-old is after his first win since the 2013 Werribee Cup with the gelding having had just the two runs since including a last start fourth to I’m Imposing in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Royal Randwick on December 26.
The returning galloper is nearing his peak and looks ready to win third-up despite this being his first start at both the track and the 2100m.
In a close market the other two major players in Gosford Cup betting are then Midsummer Sun ($4.20) out to do what no horse has done since 1971-72 by going back-to-back in the race and Chris Waller’s last start Listed Tattersall’s Club Cup (2400m) winner Multilateral ($4.80).
So should you stick to the bookies’ picks for your Gosford Cup bets this afternoon?
Or is there more merit to tipping an upset Gosford Cup result from a longer priced hope in the mix such as Summer Cup third placed mare Casino Dancer ($8.50) or even Oriental Lady ($13) who is the market mover in from $15?
#3 Midsummer Sun ($4.20)
Sam Kavanagh’s Monsun gelding is out to break a hoodoo going back to 1971-72 when Dark Diamond became the last back-to-back Gosford Cup winner. While history is against this seven-year-old his trainer is confident and the lead-up form, aside from a luckless Villiers Stakes 10th, has been good including an ATC Cup third at Rosehill in late November and a last start Summer Cup second when beaten just three-quarters of a length. Goes up from 54.5kg to 57kg for this but gets the draw in barrier three and is traveling very well as he gets back up to a distance he’s undefeated over (2-2-0-0).
#1 Pelicano ($3)
Has had just two runs since December of 2013 having been sidelined for a long time but this is his third run back and he’s been on a steady improve looking ready to peak. Ran a good fourth at Randwick in the Summer Cup over 2000m and the 2100m should suit as he’s got winning form up to 2600m. Classy stayer on his day and is consistent with 10 wins from 26 starts. Good draw on the rails but needs to handle the 59kg top weight as he gives some weight away to some good rivals.
#6 Oriental Lady ($13)
Adding value to the Gosford Cup top chances is Kris Lees’ five-year-old mare Oriental Lady who has winning form up to 2400m. She’s been out of form since August including a dead last at Canterbury in the December Handicap over 1550m on the 27th of last month. She was beaten under three lengths by the winner Amovatio that day however and so was far from disgraced in a funnily run race she can improve on when up in distance. Fitter for that run and could surprise a few.
