Sitting top of the Magic Millions Open Sprint odds at $3.90 each for the win are Chris Waller’s visiting Sydney galloper Whittington and the Liam Birchley-trained mare Missy Longstocking down from Brisbane.

Drawn in the outside barrier, Tale Of The Cat four-year-old Whittington will need to be fast out of the gates to cross from the wide gate with Hugh bowman to ride the stallion who is first-up here.

A dual winner and two-time placegetter from six runs over the distance, Whittington boasts one previous Gold Coast win and has form in Group 1 company in Sydney from the autumn so at his best could be hard to beat even from the barrier and with the 56.5kg.

Missy Longstocking meanwhile is drawn in gate nine for jockey Glen Colless, the Sequalo four-year-old first-up here not having raced since an 11^th in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas on this Day 12 months ago.

The other main dangers in Magic Millions Open Sprint betting this year include Rob Heathcote’s 58.5kg top weight Excellantes ($6) and Kelso Wood’s Sequalo gelding Seeking More ($6) on the rails.

Decent price for this five-year-old who ran third to Big Money in the Group 3 W.J Healy Stakes (1200m) back in the winter at home at Eagle Farm before finishing fourth to Excellantes, a rival again in this, for the Ascot Handicap over the same rack and distance. First-up in November he was second over 1050m at Doomben in a Benchmark 90 before a fourth over the same track, distance and under the same conditions last start on December 6. Was defeated a shorter margin in the second race run on a Soft (5) track and should be ready to fire over the 1100m this weekend, a distance he’s won three from five over so far.

#1 Excellantes ($6)

Seven-year-old galloper from Brisbane’s top stable won the Ascot Handicap with 59kg in the winter and improved on a couple of below par runs earlier this preparation to finish under a length away second to Saluter in a 1200m handicap at the Sunshine Coast on Boxing Day with 60kg. Christian Reith replaces Damian Browne, Excellantes the top weight here but with a lighter 58.5kg putting him right in the frame especially from the nice barrier (5).

Early money coming in for Gary Moore’s Group 1 performer who is also the market mover firming in from an earlier price of $21. Wide draw (13) and average lead-up form but on his day can be very competitive. Yet to win over the distance but was third at Sandown in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1200m) in the autumn and the Canterbury Classic ninth when beaten 4.3 lengths first-up was better than it looks on paper.
