Tony McEvoy’s Gosford Cup 2015 top weight Pelicano has opened narrow favourite at bookies around the country to handle the hefty kilos and score his first win since 2013 this Friday.
One of 10 stayers making up the field for this year’s $150,000 Listed Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup (2100m), six-year-old Court Of Jewels gelding Pelicano pays $3 through Ladbrokes.com.au to win the summer showdown as he nears peak fitness once again.
Drawn in the inside alley with Hugh Bowman to ride on 59kg, the galloper goes up 1.5kg on the weight he and Bowman carried when fourth behind I’m Imposing in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day.
That was just his second start in 12 months following a first-up eighth to Rudy in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) before which Pelicano spent a year on the sidelines following a win in the 2013 Listed Werribee Cup (2600m).
He should be improving then with a couple of runs behind him now and getting out over more metres on Friday.
Following closely in the Gosford Gold Cup odds at $3.80 is then the defending champion Midsummer Sun in barrier three on 57kg for jockey Blake Shinn.
Sam Kavanagh’s Monsun gelding won the race last year with 54kg and so is up in weights but comes off a nice second in the Summer Cup from December 26.
His trainer is confident heading into the clash too where Midsummer Sun will be after back-to-back Gosford Cup wins last achieved back in 1971-72 by Dark Diamond.
“I wouldn’t swap him for anything else in the race,” Kavanagh told Racenet.
“I think the field last year was a little stronger, and my galloper is more consistent this time around.
“The form around him is particularly strong and the heavier race schedule this campaign should help his chances.”
Next best in Gosford Cup betting is then Multilateral ($4.60) in barrier two, Chris Waller’s Mizzen Mast six-year-old coming off a New Year’s Day win at Randwick in the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m).
Glyn Schofield stays on the galloper who goes up just one kilo to 56.5kg this week.
Rounding out the single figure hopes are then Hawkesbury-based mare Casino Dancer ($8.50) who comes off a string of nice runs including her close Summer Cup third when beaten under a length and the Paul Perry-trained Tattersalls Club Cup runner-up to Multilateral from January 1 Ghost Protocol ($9) before the markets open up.
