Murt Flirts with 2015 Magic Millions Guineas Success

The Brendan McCarthy-trained gelding’s chances have been made that much more difficult after finding no luck in yesterday’s draw when allocated the third widest gate.

While McCarthy admits the team has their work cut out for them now, the trainer isn’t giving up hope considering the gelding will be fitted with blinkers for the first time.

“We’re heading into this race with a few things in our favour, but everyone has said going into the race that you have to draw a barrier and we haven’t,” McCarthy admitted to Racing Victoria.

One thing working in Murt The Flirt’s favour is the step up in distance to 1400 metres after running over 1100-1200m his first two times out.

“He’s the sort of horse you can pretty much do anything on […] so yeah the 1400m isn’t a problem, it’s just a matter of how much extra ground we have to cover (from the wide barrier),” the trainer said.

After comfortably winning the Magic Millions 3YO Classic (1100m) in Ballarat on November 22, Murt The Flirt was expected to do well in the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes (1200m) one month later. Yet the gelding couldn’t make anything of the race, finishing just under two lengths behind Aerobar.

Despite the loss, McCarthy believes there was plenty of merit in the race that the horse can use to improve in the 2015 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.

“He did quite a bit wrong that day. I know it was his first time that way, but he ran around a bit […] and I think putting the blinkers on will straighten those things out,” the trainer said.

“When he actually got clear running he really found the line […] after the post he was well and truly in front, so he finished the race off really well.”

“We had actually intended on racing him earlier with the blinkers on, but we just wanted him to learn a little bit before we really needed them and put them on for the big one.”

Murt The Flirt is a $16 shot in the Magic Millions Guineas betting at for which Hijack Hussy is the $3.50 favourite.
