2015 Magic Millions Cup Field & Barrier Draw

The $400,000 Magic Millions Cup (1400m) is one of eight races running at the Gold Coast this Saturday as part of the Magic Millions Race Day.

14 horses are set to tackle the middle-distance race following the scratching of Peter and Paul Snowden’s Snippets Land.

Gai Waterhouse will deliver a dual-pronged attack on the race with two of the top three rated horses – Driefontein and Spurtonic – however both remain luckless following the barrier draw.

Five-year-old mare Driefontein will jump from barrier 11 with Tommy Berry in the saddle while Spurtonic will be one gate in with Hugh Bowman to ride.

Driefontein has been hit and miss this year, finding victory in the Group 1 Sangster Classic (1200m) and second placings in the Group 2 Ripper Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Tab.com.au Stakes (1200m) but has also finished end of the field in races such as the Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) and Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m).

Due to her impressive resume the mare will carry the top weight of 59.5kg, however this is the same weight she carried in the Ripper Stakes which was also over 1400m.

Five-year-old gelding Spurtonic has been lightly raced this year with just two starts to his name. After finishing dead last in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) back in March, the gelding was sent to the spelling paddock for just under seven months before returning in the Filante Handicap (1500m), where he finished fifth of seven runners.

Since then, Spurtonic has won two of his three barrier trials, showing a nice turn of foot last time on December 30.

Her chances at success in the 2015 Magic Millions Cup haven’t been made any easier but Waterhouse will be the trainer to beat on Saturday.

Chris Waller’s Strawberry Boy has scored the ideal jump from barrier one with Damian Browne to ride. The six-year-old gelding is in great form following three placings from three starts this campaign.

Strawberry Boy won the Listed Ladies Day Cup (1400m) first up on November 6 before finishing third in both the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) and Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m). The gelding will undoubtedly be an early favourite when betting opens at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Gundy Son will back up after winning the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) last Saturday on the Gold Coast. Tony Gollan’s nine-year-old gelding proved he still has what it takes to win and will jump from barrier four with Tegan Harrison as hoop.

Last start winners The Bowler, Phelan Ready, and Saluter will all fight for their share of the $400,000 prize money.
