2015 Magic Millions Classic Hopeful Perignon Continues to Improve

Following the news yesterday that Perignon would be fitted with winkers for the first time in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday, trainer Gerald Ryan is becoming increasing confident in the filly’s chances after impressive track work on Tuesday morning.

Perignon drew barrier 11 in the race’s live draw this morning but will come in one spot should last emergency Wicked Investment fail to qualify. The filly is one of four single figure hopefuls in the race with odds of $8.50 at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Hoop Brenton Avdulla has retained the ride after the pair won the Tab Rewards Plate (1200m) at Canterbury on December 27.

After the filly got back beyond midfield after jumping from barrier ten she was three wide with cover. All hope looked lost when she was still five lengths away from the leaders at the turn but she worked her way into the clear and hit the line strongly, taking the lead with just 10 metres to go.

Like Ryan, Avdulla is confident that winkers will help the daughter of Snitzel on Saturday in her bid to win the 2015 Magic Millions Classic.

“On debut at Wyong she was slow out but at Canterbury she jumped okay, it was just that we drew wide and I didn’t want to bustle her early,” Avdulla told TVN.

“I elected to come back, she could have been closer if we drew a gate.

“She has drawn basically in the middle on Saturday and with the winkers that should see us a little bit closer.”

After working strongly at Rosehill Gardens on Tuesday morning, it seems the filly has continued to improve since her last start win.

“She went a half mile with a mate and they ran their first 400m in 29 seconds with the last 400m in 23.70 and she clocked 11.01 for her final 200m,” Ryan told TVN.

“The best thing about the work is that she did it with something up her sleeve, she has more to give on Saturday.”

Perignon will travel north to Queensland on Tuesday night along with Aerobar, who will represent Ryan in the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) on Saturday.
