Chris Waller will be out in force at Gosford Racecourse on Friday in the day’s marquee race after nominating for a bumper five horses from his four-time Sydney premiership winning stables in the Gosford Cup 2015.
Nominations for this year’s $150,000 Listed Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) have been extended until Tuesday morning after 14 early entries were received today.
Five of those are prepared by master horseman Waller including his last start black-type winning import Multilateral.
After disappointing form earlier this summer the Mizzen Mast six-year-old returned to form when stepped down in class for the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m) that he won by a length on New Year’s Day at Randwick.
Also coming via that race is the Paul Perry-trained runner-up Ghost Protocol, the Cockney Rebel six-year-old a length off Waller’s horse in the mile and a half showdown last Thursday.
Waller’s other Gosford Cup nominees are Excites six-year-old Black Jag, Lonhro gelding Hoylonny, veteran eight-year-old Permit who ran fourth behind his stablemate in the Tatt’s Cup last time out and Goulburn Cup winner Pythagorean.
Black Jag is one of the best fancied for the Gosford Cup after his close third behind another Waller-trained galloper Amovatio in the December Handicap (1550m) on December 27 at Canterbury.
Aside from Multilateral the only other last start winner in the mix this year is the Damien Lane-trained Wyong galloper Nissile coming off a victory over the track and distance on December 29.
Also coming off a good lead-up run in Sydney is Hawkesbury-based Casino Prince mare Casino Dancer who finished under a length away third behind I’m Imposing in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Boxing Day.
The Sam Kavanagh-trained runner-up in that race Midsummer Sun is another Gosford Cup nominations, the Monsun seven-year-old having also run third to Malice in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) in late November, as is fourth past the post in the Summer Cup Pelicano.
Runner-up in the mud behind subsequent Sydney Cup winner The Offer in the 2013 Ballarat Cup, the Tony McEvoy-trained Pelicano also won that year’s Werribee Cup before a year away from racing with the Summer Cup just the six-year-old’s second run back off that lengthy break.
Rounding out the Gosford Cup 2015 nominations are then the Bart & James Cummings-trained Blazing Dragon coming off a second over 2400m at Warwick Farm from Christmas eve, John O’Shea’s Summer Cup failure Gallatin (9th), Oriental Lady and recent Rosehill winner Phrases.
