Testashadow Top 2015 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Chance

Sydney’s Gary Portelli rates his last start Rosehill winner Testashadow as a “top three or four” chance in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas 2015 at the Gold Coast Racecourse this Saturday.

The Testa Rossa gelding is one of only two single-figure hopes in the futures betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for this year’s $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) paying $7 for the win.

The Magic Millions Guineas odds are firmly led by the Tony Gollan-trained Hussonet filly Hijack Hussy ($3.80) who was beaten into second last start by a long-neck in an upset Group 3 Vo Rouge Stakes (1300m) result at the Gold Coast on December 27.

She has been escaping the heat and blistering Brisbane conditions back home with a week in and out of the pool at Washpool Lodge out at in the Scenic Rim to help bring her on and keep her focus ahead of Saturday.

As for Testashadow he was last seen winning his second career victory at start number nine at Rosehill Gardens on December 20.

A $50,000 buy from the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale he was positioned four lengths off the leaders in the $85,000 Cellarberations 3YO Benchmark 72 (1400m) by jockey Tim Clark who eased him out at the 500m.

A clear run late saw him hit the lead with 150m left to travel and he held on despite Tree Of Jesse getting ahead before Testashadow dived late to score by a nose.

That followed a close second when improving from second last off the fence to a neck off the winner Berry Delicious have getting nabbed late over the same track and distance a fortnight earlier.

As yet unraced in stakes company, Saturday’s restricted Magic Millions Guineas race looks the ideal next target for Testashadow who has now had four runs over the distance for two wins and a second.

“He has also come on really well,” Portelli told Sunday’s The Daily Telegraph.

“I rate him a top-three or four chance.”

With the non-acceptance of Gai Waterhouse’s class filly Giulietta in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) meanwhile, Portelli will now be represented in the lucrative juveniles’ feature by Racy.

She comes off a second behind fellow Magic Millions Classic contender Perignon at Canterbury in late December and has come through that race well ahead of her 1200m debut where Portelli hopes she draws between barriers three and eight.

He also has Straturbo racing in the $176,000 Magic Millions Sprint (1100m), the team to make the trip to the Sunshine State later this week as Portelli hopes to avoid the predicted hot weather.

“The temperatures are set to soar so I’m planning to take them up to the Gold Coast as close as possible to the race,” he said.

“They will leave by float Thursday night and get there Friday morning. We will keep them well-hydrated and they will be ready to race next Saturday.”
