Three-year-old gelding Murt The Flirt will wear blinkers for the first time this weekend in a bid to win the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast.
Trainer Brendan McCarthy worked the gelding in blinkers during training last preparation where he performed “super” with them on. However after working well enough without them, the trainer opted to run Murt The Flirt without them in his first two starts.
Murt The Flirt won the Magic Millions 3YO Classic (1100m) at Ballarat on debut before finishing outside the placings in the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes (1200m) one month later.
“I thought we’ll wait until we really need them. He had a jump out in Sydney last Tuesday and he went well in them,” McCarthy told TVN.
“I think if he had the blinkers on at Wyong he would have finished closer to the mark. The next one is the big one and with experience under his belt and the blinkers it should really help him.”
Despite finishing fifth at Wyong, Murt The Flirt was just under two lengths behind the winner Aerobar, which pleased McCarthy given the horse was green and blocked for a run in the concluding stages of the race.
He is confident the step up in distance from 1200 to 1400 metres will suit the gelding, which ran through the line once he gained a clear run.
Jockey Brenton Avdulla has retained the ride.
“Brenton has been riding him and he’s very happy with him,” McCarthy said.
Murt The Flirt is a $15 shot to win the 2015 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas at Ladbrokes.com.au, with Hijack Hussy the clear favourite at $3.80 after winning the Listed Lexus Hybrid Plate (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
The filly ran second in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) on December 27, just half a length behind Mywayorthehighway – a $17 3YO Guineas hopeful.
