In a perfectly-timed trip out of the city Group 1 winning trainer Tony Gollan had his Magic Millions 3YO Guineas 2015 fancy Hijack Hussy cooling off out at Aratula before her big assignment at the Gold Coast this Saturday.
Early $3.80 favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au to win this year’s $820,000 $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m), Gollan’s three-year-old Hussonet filly Hijack Hussy has won three of her nine starts to date including two this spring – summer season.
Her latest victory was over Sea Spray in the Listed Lexus Hybrid Stakes (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day, November 4 at Flemington, before her third behind Savoureux in the Listed Mode Stakes (1200m) back at Doomben a month later.
Her latest start was at the Gold Coast on December 27 in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) where she finished runner-up in an upset loss as the beaten favourite behind Mywayorthehighway who is now at $17 in futures Magic Millions Guineas odds.
Beaten a long-neck that day the punters have remained faithful for her to return to form and the winnerss stall in the Magic Millions Guineas however, the field for which is due out shortly.
Gollan often sends his horses out to leading horseman Kevin Thomas’s Washpool Lodge at Aratula in the Scenic Rim region for some time in the pool, exactly as he has done with Hijack Hussy over the past week.
With Brisbane suffering from red hot conditions he was happy to give his filly, who is coming to the end of a long preparation, some much needed time to relax and cool down before her Gold Coast run.
“I do it quite a bit, particularly when horses are deep into their preparations like she is,” Gollan told The Courier-Mail on Sunday.
“She went out there after Melbourne as well, but did nothing. This time we kept her up to the mark on the water walker. It’s just another way to keep their head in the game.
“It’s the worst week I’ve encountered with horses and how uncomfortable they were in the stable.
“I’m so pleased she was out of town, happy and enjoying herself in the water.”
Originally her Melbourne Cup Day winning jockey Michael Rodd was set to return from Singapore to take the Magic Millions Guineas ride on Hijack Hussy but he was ruled out on the weekend.
Hugh Bowman looked the next in line to take the prized mount but Gollan said on Sunday that Tim Bell would now be staying on after riding her in her two most recent runs.
While Bell and Hijack Hussy suffered defeat in those two runs, Gollan said there were genuine excuses as she was drawn wide in both runs and suffered early interference in the Vo Rogue Plate before a brave late run.
He is then sweating on the Magic Millions Guineas barrier draw hoping for a better gate for his favourite this week, allowing Hijack Hussy to settle closer to the speed as she shoots for her third win over the 1400m in as many starts.
“If she can draw a barrier and be a bit closer, like she was at Flemington, it will make a huge difference,” he said.
“These three-year-olds are so even at the moment, it’s just impossible to give them the start she’s been giving from the back and beat them.”
Following Hijack Hussy in the Magic Millions Guineas betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is Testashadow ($7), the only other single figure hope currently.
Gary Portelli’s Testa Rossa gelding won his latest start back on December 20 at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney by a narrow margin with a big weight (59kg), Saturday to be his first Queensland run.
The Gerald Ryan-trained Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes winner Aerobar and Bold Circle then follow on $11.
Bold Circle is a notable market mover following the David Payne-trained Bernardini colt’s win at Randwick over 1200m on New Year’s Day.
It was a gutsy late effort from the youngster who showed a lovely burst of speed in the end that saw his price for the Gold Coast shorten dramatically.
