Gear Change for Perignon in 2015 Magic Millions Classic

Gerald Ryan will pull out all the stops in a bid to win the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast this Saturday with Perignon, including a gear change.

The two-year-old filly was an impressive fourth in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m) on debut before winning the TAB Rewards Plate (1200m) at Canterbury one week later on December 27.

Perignon got back beyond midfield and three wide with cover in the 2YO Plate and was still five lengths away from the lead when turning. She worked into the clear and hit the line strongly, hitting the front with just 10 metres to go.

While Ryan is usually hesitant about changing gears on last start winners, he has opted to put winkers on Perignon in the 2015 Magic Millions Classic to help her gain some early speed and get into an ideal position early.

“I don’t like changing gear on horses that have won their last starts,” Ryan told Sky Racing.

“But I thought winkers might help her muster some early speed and get into a position so I applied to the stewards last week to put them on and tried her in them in a gallop on Friday.

“She worked well and I’m hoping they will do the trick although Brenton Avdulla did say that he probably could have been closer at Canterbury but he kept her where she was comfortable in the run.”

Ryan has had several runners in the feature Gold Coast race over the years but a win has so far eluded him. The trainer’s best result was second in 2003 with Danbird before Perignon’s sire Snitzel finished third in 2005.

Perignon is on the third line of betting in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting market at, offering $8 to win alongside Frequendly.

Claudia Jean is the favourite at $5.50 with Wicked Intent close behind at $6.

Ryan will also saddle Aerobar in the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) on Saturday. The filly sits just outside the single figure odds at $11 after winning the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes (1200m) last time out.

“Aerobar has done really well and both she and Perignon will gallop at Rosehill on Tuesday morning then travel up to Queensland that night,” Ryan said.
