Dabernig Pleased with 2015 Magic Millions Classic Pair

Co-trainers David Hayes & Tom Dabernig will deliver a dual-pronged attack in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast this Saturday after accepting with both Miss Idyllic and Claudia Jean.

While Claudia Jean led the Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au before it was temporarily taken down for the field and barrier draw announcements, Miss Idyllic has the advantage of having already run in the clockwise direction of the race last month.

The filly was runner-up in the TAB Place Multi Plate (1100m) on December 20, finishing just a neck behind winner Ottoman.

“Miss Idyllic has had the benefit of the race in Sydney and she actually had two barrier trials up there before she ran in Melbourne,” Dabernig told Racing Victoria.

“She’s got a great constitution and for a young two-year-old she’s quite seasoned.

“Unencumbered won last year’s race at his sixth start and I think with the two-year-olds having the benefit of a bit of racing is a big plus and if she drew a gate she’d be around the mark.”

Claudia Jean’s dominant three and a half length victory on debut in the Christmas Season Plate (1000m) at Flemington rightly earned her the top spot in the betting, however the filly has yet to run over the 1200m of the 2015 Magic Millions 2YO Classic or in the clockwise direction.

The filly will need to rely on natural ability to win the $2 million feature race on Saturday, considering her lack of experience, however Dabernig is confident she has what it takes.

“It’s all very new for Claudia Jean and she’s still a bit raw still but she does have quite a lot of ability,” he said.

“She’s only had the benefit of the one run down the straight at Flemington but we’ve done a fair bit of work with her the opposite way and she looks to have switched to her other leg fairly well.

“I thought she was quite impressive when she won, she was never really tested to the line and she won with a fair bit in hand.”

Dabernig is unable to split the duo at the moment but that could all change after the barriers are drawn on Tuesday.

“The barrier draw is a big key on the tight Gold Coast track and it’s also important that they get up there and settle in well,” he said.
