Mywayorthehighway Wins 2014 Vo Rogue Plate at 81/1

Mick Mair’s lightly-raced Sunshine Coast-based galloper enjoyed a rewarding trip down to the Gold Coast on Saturday with Mywayorthehighway scoring an upset victory in the Vo Rogue Plate 2014 as an $81 roughie shot.

The New Zealand-bred Swiss Ace filly broke her maiden status four runs into her career when first-up off a five month break earlier this month beating home a mediocre field at home on December 7 in a maiden plate over 1000m.

It was a notable class rise from that to her first black-type run over the weekend in the lucrative $150,000 Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) at the Gold Coast.

Drawn wide in barrier 11 of 13 for the three-year-olds’ set weights clash, Mywayorthehighway had a new rider in the saddle too with Daniel Griffin taking over for Luke Tarrant.

Despite it being her first Group assignment, first look at further than 1200m, first go at the Gold Coast and her double digit draw the outsider proved too hard to run down and beat home the short-priced favourite Hijack Hussy ($2.60) by nearly half a length.

It was a gutsy effort according to Griffin who said she showed plenty of heart over the closing 200 metres as the challengers came for her.

“They kept coming at her but she just kept fighting,” he said post-win.

Tony Gollan’s beaten top fancy Hijack Hussy, coming off a string of good runs including a close third behind Savoureux in the Listed Mode Stakes (1200m) from December 6 at Doomben, remains the $3.60 favourite through to return to the track on January 10 and take out the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).

Her jockey on Saturday Tim Bell was pleased with her run but said the winner kicked back too strongly for them in the closing stages, Hijack Hussy having had to do a lot of work to get around form her wide barrier nine draw earlier in the race.

Third past the post in the Vo Roughe Plate was then the Stuart Kendrick-trained Worthy Cause ($21) who was just a nose off Hijack Hussy, and 0.3 of a length ahead of the fourth placed Loveitt ($12) from the Gai Waterhouse stables.

The upset winner led most of the way in the Vo Rogue Plate for her emotional win being the last horse picked out by the late great racecaller Wayne Wilson who lost his long battle with cancer back in June.

A $25,000 bargain buy for Gerry Harvey, Mywayorthehighway’s win was also significant for Mair who is recovering from a recent stroke.

She was selected from Mair’s stables by Wilson who wanted to race a final horse before his passing.

“He took a share for his wife Sally (Wilson) who now races the filly in partnership with some other stable clients,” Wilson’s stable representative Belinda Kelly told the media on Saturday.

“Mick will be thrilled. He actually watched the race at home with Jana Griffin (wife of winning jockey Dan Griffin).

“I don’t know what to say. I can’t remember ever being so thrilled.”

It is now onto the Gold Coast’s major race day Saturday week with Mywayorthehighway who is on track for another shot at Hijack Hussy in the 2015 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.

Despite her Vo Rogue victory she’s still at a juicy $18 to win the Guineas through
