Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Sydney’s Gerald Ryan could step his promising four-year-old Dothraki up in distance on Magic Millions Day at the Gold Coast Saturday week in a test for the Stradbroke Handicap 2015 in Brisbane this coming winter.
The Mossman gelding has twice run over 1400m during his 19 start career so far, and Ryan may be tempted to do so again on January 10 in the lucrative $400,000 Magic Millions Cup (1400m).
The other option for the in-form galloper on the day is the $200,000 Magic Millions Open Sprint (1100m) with a decision on which race he will run to be made over the next day.
Dothraki’s first look at the 1400m produced his maiden black-type win back in November last year when defeating Suavito in the Listed Hilton Hotels & Resorts Stakes at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Winner of the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) in the mud between that run and his next start over 1400m, Dothraki weakened late next time he was tested over the 1400m at Eagle Farm on May 31 this year.
That day he ran one and a half lengths away eighth behind Sir Moments in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m), Ryan giving him a good five month rest after that run before bringing him back in late October.
Dothraki has run top three in all five of his starts since including his half-length third to Barbed in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) last Saturday.
If he does run in the 2015 Magic Millions Cup next month and perform well, then Ryan said he would seriously consider a campaign targeting the $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Doomben Racecourse on June 6.
“His five runs this time in have been really consistent,” Ryan told TVN on Sunday.
“I’ve got a bit of a push to run him in the 1400 (metres). If he gets 1400 (metres) by the way we’ve been riding him a race like the Stradbroke could come into play.”
As for Ryan’s other Magic Millions Race Day hopefuls his big chance in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) is Perignon.
The promising Snitzel filly pays $8 through Ladbrokes.com.au in the latest Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds led by Claudia Jean and Wicked Intent at $5.50 after she improved on a Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic fourth on debut to win the $85,000 TAB Rewards Plate (1200m) at Canterbury over the weekend.
Perignon has come from behind in both of her runs so far but Ryan believes she is far from a one-dimensional runner and knows the Magic Millions 2YO Classic barrier draw is key to her chances.
“(Jockey) Brenton (Avdulla) said yesterday that if she had drawn a barrier she could have settled in the first five or six,” Ryan said on Sunday.
“I know she is not brilliantly quick and she is going to get back and that’s why the draw is important.
“You’ve just got to hope they overdo it up front.”
The stable also saddles-up a strong chance in the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) in current $13 chance Aerobar, the Flying Spur filly having won the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes (1200m) on December 18.
