2014 Summer Cup Results: Veteran I’m Imposing Wins

Chris Waller’s veteran nine-year-old I’m Imposing defied his age and continued his good spring – summer form with a Boxing Day win in the Summer Cup 2014 in Sydney last week.

The Danehill Dancer gelding jumped the $3.30 favourite through online bookmakers including Ladbrokes.com.au in this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Royal Randwick following a string of good runs over the past month.

Winner of the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill back on November 29, I’m Imposing came via a close second to Rudy in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on December 13.

Enjoying a drop down in class but a step up in distance, he recorded his second win from three starts over the 2000m at Randwick Racecourse on December 26 then with a three-quarter length victory over Midsummer Sun ($7.50) who ran 10th in the Villiers Stakes a fortnight earlier.

In third only a nose further back to add value to the Summer Cup trifecta was then the Mike Van Gestel-trained $31 roughie Casino Dancer.

Not only did I’m Imposing, who has now won seven of his 36 starts for $543,915 in prize money, defy his age but he also defied recent history with his Summer Cup victory.

He became the first back-to-back Summer Cup winner since Donald back in 1928 – 1929, no mean feat for a rising 10-year-old.

Winning jockey Tye Angland produced a brilliant ride on the galloper in front of a Boxing Day crowd of over 10,000 last Friday, I’m Imposing carrying a notable 59kg to victory.

He then is only the second horse after Linesman (59.5kg, 1997) in over a century to carry more than 57.5kg to victory in the summer classic.

Waller was thrilled with the horse’s historically significant win and was pleased he had bounced back after a second last when 14th to Hucklebuck in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington back on November 8 during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

“All of his runs this prep have been good except in the Emirates Stakes (at Flemington) where there was a legitimate excuse with a lack of speed in the race,” Waller told TVN.

“It’s a good effort, just a great horse and obviously a great group of owners.

“It’s very rewarding as a couple of weeks ago we ran second in the Villiers and we went home with our heads between our knees, but you bounce back quick in this game.

“They don’t have to be the best horse in the stable but when a horse has been in the stable for a long time, it makes it more special.”

Waller is now looking ahead at a Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival raid and named the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 9 as a nice long term target for the evergreen warhorse.

“I’m already looking forward to next preparation. I would probably look at races like the Hollindale and Doomben Cup in the winter,” he said.
