2014 Summer Cup – I’m Imposing in Barrier 9

14 potential stayers will tackle the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse this Friday after Anthony CummingsDrago failed to accept for the Boxing Day feature race.

The $125,000 Summer Cup is one of eight races running at Randwick on Boxing Day, attracting a talented field of stayers.

Chris Waller’s I’m Imposing headlines the final field but has drawn awkwardly in barrier nine, carrying the top weight of 59kg.

The weight allocation is no surprise considering the nine-year-old gelding won the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on November 29 before finishing a close second in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 13. Tye Angland has retained the ride for the third consecutive time.

There are another six horses coming to the 2014 Summer Cup via the Villiers Stakes – Pelicano (8th), Scream Machine (5th), Midsummer Sun (10th), Multilateral (13th), Kaypers (12th), and Keep Cool (14th).

Pelicano’s place on the field came down to the gelding’s trackwork on Tuesday morning. He obviously impressed trainer Tony McEvoy since he accepted with the six-year-old. Pelicano won the Listed Werribee Cup (2600m) last December before getting sidelined for 12 months’ time due to a lengthy surgery and recuperation.

Pelicano will carry 57.5kg, one and a half kilograms more than his weight in the Villiers but still two and a half kilograms less than what he won the Werribee Cup at, and jump from barrier seven with Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

Multilateral will carry the minimum weight of 54kg and jump from the ideal barrier three. The Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) winner is one of three horses representing Waller in the race, along with I’m Imposing and Hoylonny.

Anthony Cummings’ Surge Ahead has scored the ideal inside run from barrier one while Godolphin will be represented by the John O’Shea-trained Gallatin from barrier six with Lester Grace to ride.

Betting markets for the race will open at Ladbrokes.com.au shortly so make sure you open your online account in preparation. New customers will receive a $250 bonus match on their first bet when they use code: BETBONUS.
