Claudia Jean Heads to 2015 Magic Millions 2YO Classic

Just five two-year-olds lined up in the Christmas Season Plate (1000m) at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday. Despite the relatively easy race, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Claudia Jean impressed with a three and a half length victory over favourite Bosnia, which has earned her a trip to the Gold Coast for the 2015 Magic Millions Carnival on January 10.

Claudia Jean made her debut in the Christmas Season Plate with a starting price of $8.50 at Ladbrokes.com.au but still managed to beat odds-on favourite Bosnia ($1.65), making her first run a memorable one. The filly jumped well, showing good gate speed, before lengthening when hoop Jye McNeil asked her to at the 400m mark and hitting the line with “plenty left in the tank”.

“She was pretty soft on the line,” McNeil told TVN.

Dabernig believes that the win more than warrants a trip north for the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) alongside stable mate Miss Idyllic, who finished runner-up in the TAB Place Multi Plate (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse also on Saturday.

“She’s professional so I think she would be a prime candidate to be able to do it,” Dabernig said.

The trainer noted that while Claudia Jean has yet to work over the clockwise direction of the Magic Millions the stable will begin preparations over the coming weeks.

Miss Idyllic has yet to score a victory but three second placings from four career starts has the filly well tipped in the betting market for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Both Miss Idyllic and Claudia Jones are on the third line of betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, offering $9 to win the $2 million restricted race. The duo sits below race favourite Wicked Intent ($3.60) and Pepperano ($8).

Jockey Craig Williams described Bosnia as a “nice, athletic horse” but Claudia Jean was just too sharp on debut to beat. The colt would be suited over more ground and won’t make the trip to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions.
