In Brisbane on Saturday the feature race is the 2014 Lough Neagh Stakes for the middle-distance summer sprinters, betting tips for which are found right here.
The field for this year’s $175,000 Listed Garrards Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) features a dozen hopefuls and the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au are co-led by Big Money and rejuvenated sprinter Whiskey Allround.
Scone visitor Big Money has a nice record cleaning up during the Brisbane carnivals and was last seen defeating a similar field to Saturday’s line-up in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) at the Doomben track.
He carries the 59.5kg top weight in the Lough Neagh however and so will need to be at his best.
Despite this he’s the $3.60 co-favourite with market mover Whiskey Allround from the local stables of Tony Gollan.
Group 2 placed as a juvenile, four-year-old Whiskey Allround is on a roll with three wins from as many starts this time in against easier company and is looking to continue the form back at black-type level this weekend.
So will the top two in Lough Neagh Stakes betting run the quinella, or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of the George Moore placegetters Someday and Cape Kidnappers?
#4 Someday ($7)
Gollan’s other runner Someday is drawn wide in gate nine but has the class to overcome and only goes up half a kilo to 57kg on the weight he carried to a good second in the George Moore last time out. Was finishing well that day and will be improved third-up over more distance. Has winning form up to a mile after a Brisbane Handicap (1600m) victory here last summer and is three form four over the track and distance – an imposing statistic for galloper on the improve.
#8 Whiskey Allround ($3.60)
Think the Gollan stable mates can finish one-two here with Whiskey Allround to relish barrier two and Bell staying on with the nice 54kg light weight. Well weighted and in flying form with three wins on the trot this time in non-black type company. Gets his chance to prove himself here with the form to roll on to the Listed showdown.
#2 Cape Kidnappers ($7)
Always honest Commands seven-year-old has the outside draw but should be ready to tackle them in yet another brave run. Is definitely a short course specialist, as proven by his back-to-back winter Listed wins in Brisbane over 1110m and 1000m respectively before his second to Big Money in the Group 3 W.J. Healy (1200m) in June. First-up was third under two lengths off that same horse in the George Moore on a Soft track. While he sees the extra metres for the first time the form is too good to ignore. Loves the give out of the ground too with ace form on Soft (5-4-0-1) and Heavy (2-0-2-0) tracks so the rain won’t worry him.
