Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday in Perth a host of black-type features will light up Ascot Racecourse including the WA St Leger 2014, betting tips for which are detailed below.
There are just seven stayers making up the field for this year’s $100,000 Listed Perth Ice Works W.A. St. Leger (2100m), the set weights race for three and four-year-olds due to run as Race 2 at 1:47pm (local time).
Clear odds-on favourite in the WA St Leger betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Real Love ($1.70), the last start Group 3 Queen’s Cup (2200m) winning mare also heading the markets for the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) back at the track on January 1.
She runs in this as opposed to the Group 2 CB Cox Stakes over the same track and distance on Saturday’s Perth race card as the penalty she will incur for the 2015 Perth Cup will be smaller for winning this race as opposed to the other.
That’s the same story for the Paula Wagg-trained Balmont Girl ($3) who is the next best in WA St Leger betting after being scratched out from the CB Cox Stakes field.
So will these two smart mares, who clash again on New Year’s Day, run the WA St Leger quinella?
Or is there an upset on the agenda for the first black-type of the day?
#4 Balmont Girl ($3)
At three dollars as opposed to the odds-on favourite it’s hard to go past this mare for value. She’s out wider in barrier six but there’s plenty of time to overcome that from this small field over 2100m. Was targeting the Cox Stakes but the swap will make little difference as it’s the same track & distance on the same day. This is an easier field, fewer rivals and the form is good. Won the Asian Beau then finished second in the Railway. Her Kingston Town Classic failure can be explained by a mildly lame leg she’s since recovered from, it was a skin thing nothing more and should be back ready for a big run here, the WA Oaks winner up in distance.
#5 Real Love ($1.70)
No doubting she’s the one to beat, but think the value is in Balmont Girl. Adam Durrant’s Perth Cup favourite is tracking ideally with lots of nice form in the lead-up. Has won two from four this time in, and run second in the other two runs. Her last start a fortnight ago produced an easy win in the Group 3 Queen’s Cup (2200m) and can emulate that here with a nice run. Beat Balmont Girl by one when they finished third and fourth respectively in the Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m) in the autumn, the winner of which (Respondent) they face off with again in Saturday’s rematch.
#2 Vital Edition ($17)
While it is tempting to go with the Derby winner and third pick Respondent ($6.50) here to finish off the trifecta, going to stick with the value tips and say Vital Edition is a definite danger form barrier two. The Vital Equine four-year-old faces a notable rise in class here but is proven up to 2200m when third over the distance in early November. Won twice at the track and if it’s a slowly run race will have the sprint to close fast in the end.
