2014 R.S. Crawford Stakes Tips & Selections

Saturday sees Perth’s Ascot Racecourse host its latest summer meet with CB Cox Stakes Day featuring a strong line-up of feature races including the R.S. Crawford Stakes 2014 – betting tips for which are found below.

Originally there were seven final acceptors for this year’s $100,000 Listed R.S. Crawford Stakes (1000m) but only five are left in the mix with Pininci (barrier two) and Benito (barrier three) both scratched out.

The markets at Ladbrokes.com.au are now led by the Daniel Pearce-trained Travinator backed in from $3 to $2.80 to continue an ace record when resuming.

The six-year-old has won three and finished second once in his four first-up runs and is undefeated over the 1000m at Ascot with a perfect four-from-four record he’s out to defend on Saturday.

R.S. Crawford Stakes betting is wide open with so few runners all having claims with the biggest danger being Cool Trade ($3), Alan Mathews’ Trade Fair mare coming off back-to-back seconds including to Benito in the Thunderbolt 1000 a fortnight ago.

So will the first two in betting also run one-two on Saturday?

Or is there an ‘upset’ R.S. Crawford Stakes result on the cards from a longer-priced chance?

#3 Travinator $2.80)

This Mosayter gelding is the deserving favourite after his excellent form last time in and the hard-to-knock first-up record. Only beaten once in four runs when resuming, and that was a second place finish, so will relish being fresh again here. Has had four runs for four wins over this track & distance too, plus flashed home for a trial win at Lark Hill at the start of the month to help with the fitness. Lots to like and hard not to back with the outstanding stats working in his favour.

#1 Shining Knight ($4.20)

For a bit of ‘value’, which really is hard to find in a market of five where the longest priced chance is at $13 after a big drift, think Shining Knight could surprise and run home well here. Will be getting back and settle at the tail end and, while this is short of his best distance, the headwind up front might make it tricky for some of those up front to keep up a pace. Grant Williams’ Colonel Reeves Stakes winner then could be finishing off well, his class worth noting with a Group 1 Winterbottom third from November 22, and improvement to come off his fourth over the track and distance to Benito in the Thunderbolt 1000.

#6 Cool Trade ($3)

Awesome lead-up form from this consistent mare who has had two goes at the distance for two second place runs. She was runner-up to Antique Belle in the Listed Jungle Mist over a little further on Winterbottom Stakes Day and then finished second in the Thunderbolt, the key lead-up for this, on December 6 that she can improve on especially taking out the winner from the equation.
