Zoutenant Wins 2014 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic

The Kevin Moses-trained colt Zoutenant will make the journey to the Gold Coast on January 10 for the 2015 Magic Millions after a hard-fought victory in the $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m) on Thursday afternoon.

As one of just six of twelve runners with a previous start heading into the race, Zoutenant was $3.10 favourite to win at Ladbrokes.com.au although the colt had seen his price drift out from $2.50 heading into the sprint classic. He managed to justify his favouritism however, winning just a nose ahead of Surf Seeker ($7.50) and Single Gaze ($9).

The three hit the line so well that all placings had to go to a photo finish. Zoutenant looked likely to win much easier than he did after a late charge from Team Hawkes’ Surf Seeker flying home on debut.

Moses was confident before the race considering Zoutenant was runner-up in the Sire Custodians 2YO Plate (1100m) on December 6 and happy he decided to run the colt with blinkers for the first time.

“A lot of them haven’t even had a start but he had a run the other day despite not being fit because I thought he needed prize money to get into this race but now he can go onto the other Magic Millions and will improve on that,” he said directly following the race.

“I don’t like putting blinkers on horses early but I thought the prize money was too good not to.

“I was very happy with him, he only just won but that’s all they have to do. It’s a very big win for the stable.”

He confirmed that Zoutenant will push on to the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) in three weeks’ time, against the likes of Wicked Intent and Carriages.

Both Surf Seeker and Zoutenant have slipped into the early betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au for the race, sitting on the fourth line of betting at $11 each.

Glyn Schofield earned himself a double at Wyong after winning a Benchmark 60 over 1200m with Majaska before backing up on Zoutenant.

Zoutenant got in a bit of trouble at the turn, getting held up behind the leader Moral Outrage, however Schofield was able to chase hard and hit the front late.

“I was going to peel out and come around [the leader] but I felt like I was going to get a couple of runners tight if I continued on that path,” the hoop explained.

“I saw Hugh [Bowman] drop off and a run presented itself outside Winona [Costin] and the horse took it well but when I gave him a reminder behind the saddle he decided to shift ground instead of concentrating and running true.

“He nearly gave it away but it was a good win.”
