Two-year-old cot Bosnia is making his debut for trainer John O’Shea and owner Godolphin on Saturday in the $80,000 Christmas Season Plate (1000m) down the straight at Flemington.
Racing magnate Godolphin has a growing list of impressive juvenile horses and is keen to test Bosnia, a half-brother to Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) runner Sarajevo, on Saturday.
O’Shea picked the 2014 Christmas Season Plate as Bosnia’s ideal debut run after an impressive trial win at Warwick Farm on December 9. The colt got away well despite jumping from a wide draw but ended up getting trapped very deep after showing too much restraint. After finding cover in the run, Bosnia peeled wide and picked up his rivals very impressively before bolting home to win by one and a half lengths.
After this effort, connections felt the Flemington straight was the perfect test for Bosnia.
“The speed he’s shown at home and his impressive trial win defies what he looks like physically – he’s a massive, big two-year-old,” O’Shea’s racing manager Jason Walsh said via TVN.
“But he is a very athletic and he has a lot of speed. We’ll learn a lot more at the races on Saturday, but he looks a nice colt for us going forward.
“He worked very strongly on Tuesday morning with an older horse and he’s being showing enough at home to say he’s a nice horse.
“We think he’s showing nice Stakes promise, albeit unraced, but we think the Blue Diamond trip might be short of what’s ideal for him.”
Craig Williams has scored the ride on Bosnia for Saturday and has been instructed to ride the two-year-old with cover and be allowed to work through his gears.
The beautifully bred Bosnia is the favourite in the Christmas Season Plate betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, seeing his price firm from $3.20 into $3.
