Vaughn Sigley’s flying four-year-old Black Heart Bart shoots for his third win on the trot when he leads out Saturday’s R.S. Crawford Stakes 2014 field on CB Cox Stakes Day.
Due to run as the fifth race on the Ascot program this weekend, the $100,000 Listed R.S. Crawford Stakes (1000m) field features seven smart sprinters.
Drawn ideally with the inside alley and Glenn Smith to ride is Blackfriars gelding Black Heart Bart who is likely to dominate the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
After a second behind Saturday’s Group 2 CB Cox Stakes favourite Balmont Girl in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) at the start of last month, he went on to run fourth only a length off another Cox Stakes fancy Bass Strait in the Group 3 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m).
From there he posted back-to-back wins at Ascot including the Listed Carbine Club Stakes (1400m) on November 22 where he defeated the clear 2015 Perth Cup fancy Real Love by half a length.
Black Heart Bart was last seen running home an easy three and a half lengths clear of his closest rival in a Benchmark 78+ over 1200m last Saturday, a run he’s tipped to repeat when down in distance but back up to stakes company this weekend.
The other last start winner in the RS Crawford Stakes field this year is then the David Harrison-trained Benito also drawn well in barrier three.
A winner of seven of his 14 starts to date, the four-year-old son of Due Sasso is also after a hat-trick of consecutive wins after two victories over this track and distance in the past three weeks.
The top-rated and weighted Crawford Stakes hope meanwhile with 59kg and Perth’s premier hoop William Pike to ride is then the Grant Williams-trained Shining Knight in the outside barrier.
Winner of the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) here on November 4, the Blackfriars six-year-old caught the eye when third to Magnifisio only three-quarters off the winner in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) on November 22.
From there he went down to the 1000m here on December 6 when fourth behind Benito, an effort he’s out to improve on here at a distance he boasts a strong record over (6-3-1-1).
The Crawford Stakes field is then completed by: Beaufine Stakes winner at Belmont during the winter Pininci, the resuming Travinator, Jungle Mist Classic runner-up two back Cool Trade coming off a second to Benito and veteran Shamardal seven-year-old Heavy Set.
