Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Kevin Moses’s smart colt Zoutenant has opened favourite in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2014 odds for this Thursday’s juvenile feature.
A lead-up race for two-year-olds heading towards the Gold Coast’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 10, this year’s $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m) features a final field of 12 hopefuls.
Heading the Wyong Magic Millions Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Zizou colt Zoutenant paying $3.70 after being backed in from an opening quote of $4.
Glyn Schofield has the ride on the favourite from an ideal barrier two draw, retaining the mount after being aboard for his second on debut to Voilier at Rosehill over this same distance on December 6.
Sure to take improvement out of the run Zoutenant is looking to break his maiden status before a possible trip to Queensland for the 2015 Magic Millions Classic that he pays $15 in the futures markets to win.
The on-pace galloper is likely to appreciate the tight turns at Wyong and is the one to beat according to his hoop.
“He’s quick, he’s tractable. He jumped and led (at his first start) and he was pretty strong except the last furlong (200m) where he got tired, so it shouldn’t hold any worries for him,” Schofield told AAP.
“Race experience always counts. It’s always helpful. He’s had that so he ticks a few boxes.
“It was a good test for him (first-up). It was 1100, soft track and he was without a trial so he did well to acquit himself the way he did. He will improve without doubt on that effort.”
Should Zoutenant go onto the $2 million Gold Coast feature next month Schofield will again retain the ride.
Following Zoutenant in the Wyong markets for tomorrow are then six other single figure hopes in what is a very open market.
Occupying the second and third lines of betting are two debutants in Surf Seeker ($5.50) and Perignon ($6.50) drawn at opposite ends of the field in barriers 11 and four respectively.
Prepared by Team Hawkes, Wanted colt Surf Seeker trialed at Warwick Farm on December 9 for a good second, a run he will be better for especially getting over a little more distance.
Perignon represents Gerald Ryan and also comes off a second in a Warwick Farm trial from that day, the Snitzel filly to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy for her debut.
The next best fancied are then Single Gaze ($7) who is the only non-maiden in the mix.
Nick Olive’s Canberra-based daughter of Not A Single Doubt debuted at Rosehill over 1100m on November 1 and beat home Zulu Royal by a strong one length margin as a $41 outsider, but won’t be found at those odds as she looks to retain her undefeated status here.
Rounding out the youngsters under $10 are then three on $9 with the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Stratum colt Moral Outrage, the rails-drawn Trust My Luck for David Payne and Northern Meteor filly Chloe’s Comet who has form around one-time Golden Slipper favourite Aegean Sea.
