On Saturday Royal Randwick will host the latest Group race of the Sydney Summer Racing Carnival with the Villiers Stakes 2014 taking centre stage, betting tips on the handicap clash found below.
There are 15 horses in the mix for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Inglis Villiers Stakes (1600m) due to jump as Race 6 at 4:15pm (AEDT).
Current favourite at market mover in the Villiers Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Steven O’dea-trained Sir Moments at $4.80.
Drawn wide in barrier 14 with Tim Bell in the saddle, the Choisir gelding won the Queensland Guineas – Daybreak Lover Stakes in Queensland during the winter and comes off a string of nice spring runs.
Two back the four-year-old won over 1400m on the Gold Coast before running in the traditional Villiers Stakes lead-up, the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on November 29.
There he finished fifth under two lengths off the Chris Waller-trained winner I’m Imposing who is a $10 chance to go back-to-back this weekend.
The other single figure hopes in the Villiers Stakes odds are then in-form Recognition Stakes winner Rudy ($6.50) from the Gold Coast, Festival Stakes third placegetter Strawberry Boy ($7) with the inside alley, Festival Stakes runner-up Estonian Princess ($7) and Rose Of Choice ($7) who are all dead close in a very open market.
With so many live chances, below are the Races.com.au Villiers Stakes tips sorting the pretenders from the genuine contenders.
#12 Rudy ($6.50)
Helen Page-trained Red Dazzler four-year-old is in flying form this time in back in Brisbane including back-to-back seconds at Doomben and a last start win at the track over the mile in the Listed Recognition Stakes (1630m). Distance is ideal, hasn’t been to Sydney but deserves a shot. The wet track is the key here, he’s won four from five on Heavy ground and it’s going to be rain-affected in Sydney so think he’ll relish that plus gets in on the 53kg lightweight and is drawn well in six.
#6 Sir Moments ($4.80)
Deserving favourite based on the lead-up form, but think he’ll need the luck from an outside barrier 14 draw. Carrying 55.5kg so drops half a kilo to his Festival Stakes weight when only 1.7 lengths off the winner. Has won over a mile before at Eagle Farm to end a strong winter campaign and is a Group 2 winner against his own age that campaign too. Undefeated on Soft tracks (2-2-0-0) and is a winner in the wet too on Heavy going (1-1-0-0) so is another one that will lap up a track with plenty of give.
#8 Estonian Princess ($7)
Scott Aspery’s Snitzel mare was only a nostril flare off the Festival Stakes winner and will be improving as she goes from 54kg to 53.5kg while the winner I’m Imposing goes up in weights for the rematch. That came on the back of an excellent spring in Sydney and Melbourne that included a fifth when only 1.7 lengths off Bonaria in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) over this distance at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival so she’s got class.
