A small yet classy field of eight sprinters will run in the Listed Razor Sharp (1200m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse this Saturday.
The $100,000 Razor Sharp is one of eight races running across Villiers Stakes Day, offering punters a variety of betting options and chance to back a winner.
Just two of the eight horses are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, Our Boy Malachi and Dothraki.
Team Hawkes’ six-year-old gelding Our Boy Malachi is odds-on favourite at $1.85. It’s no surprise considering he has won an impressive 15 of his 17 career starts, including the past four in a row.
Our Boy Malachi ran in just his second black-type race last time out, winning the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) by just under two lengths.
The gelding seems to be maintaining his successful form since relocating to Sydney under the care of new trainers. However this will likely be his last run of the summer with connections planning a step up in class during the autumn so back him while you still can.
Our Boy Malachi will jump from barrier three with James McDonald in the saddle.
The Gerald Ryan-trained Dothraki ($3.80) is the only other single figure hopeful at the moment. The four-year-old gelding has finished in the first two his three starts this campaign, which included a second place finish to Our Boy Malachi in the Starlight Stakes on November 29.
Dothraki will jump from barrier five with Blake Shinn to ride, carrying 58kg which is the same weight he carried last time out.
Both Howmuchdoyouloveme and Fare Well opened the betting at single figure odds but have since drifted out to $11.
Six-year-old gelding Howmuchdoyouloveme has drawn the ideal inside run from barrier one but is also due to carry the sole top weight of 59kg in the 2014 Razor Sharp. He has not been seen since the winter when he finished second last in the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m). After roughly six months in the spelling paddock, the gelding is ready to return after winning his two barrier trials in preparation.
Clarry Conners’ Fare Well has drawn the outside gate with Jason Collett in the saddle, however he is set to carry the minimum weight of 54kg.
That’s A Good Idea is the market mover of the field, seeing his price shorten overnight from $13 into $11. Peter & Paul Snowden’s five-year-old gelding won the Welter Handicap (1000m) at Kensington first up in the spring before claiming second in the Listed City Tattersalls Club Lightning (1100m) behind unbeaten Deep Field. The gelding was unlucky in the Group 2 Tab.com.au Stakes (1200m) on November 1 after dropping out without sufficient cover, finishing over 10 lengths off winner Deep Field again in seventh place.
However without Deep Field in sight in the 2014 Razor Sharp, punters are slowly coming around on That’s A Good Idea.
