Seven classy stayers have opted to contest the mile and a half race, which means punters have some great betting options without a crowded market to choose from.

Four of the seven runners are offering single figure odds in the Christmas Cup betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by Saigon Tea at $2.35.

One of two Chris Waller-trained horses entered in the race, Saigon Tea will jump from barrier four with Glyn Schofield in the saddle.

The five-year-old mare has finished in the first three ten of her eleven past times running, however she did not do so well in the Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) on October 11, which is her only black-type race to date.

Saigon Tea was out the back from the start and dropped off at the 400m mark, unable to latch onto the field. Ultimately the mare finished five lengths behind the winner in third last place.

While she finished third in the So You Think Yearlings Plate over the same distance as the Christmas Cup in November as well as winning a Benchmark 85 over 1800m her last time out, it could be an entirely different result in just her second black-type race on Saturday.

It won’t be an easy task considering the caliber of her competition, including three other single figure hopefuls.

  • #2 Metaphorical ($3.40)Peter Moody’s four-year-old mare was a fast finishing second in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) last time out, overcoming a wide start and getting grabbed in the last stride. This time the mare will enjoy the inside run from barrier one, which means she won’t have to work hard to make her way over from out wide.
  • #7 Terai ($4.80) – the John O’Shea-trained mare won the So You Think Yearlings Plate ahead of both Saigon Tea and Lucky Lucky Lucky last time out over the same distance as the Christmas Cup so her form is good. Will jump from barrier six with James McDonald to ride.
  • #6 Lucky Lucky Lucky ($8.50)Steve Englebrecht has the sole gelding in the single figure odds. The five-year-old has finished in the first three his last four times out and will jump from barrier two with Sam Clipperton in the saddle.

Rounding out the betting is sole 59kg top weight Permit ($11), market mover World Wide ($17), and Planet Purple ($31).
