Barry Mitchell’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic fancy Wicked Intent will look to secure his hold on the markets for next month’s feature with a Brisbane win in the Phelan Ready Stakes 2014 at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday.
Drawn ideally in barrier four with Brisbane’s best Chris Munce in the saddle, the Wicked Style colt is out to extend his undefeated record to three on the trot when he lines up as one of 11 two-year-old male gallopers in the $100,000 Listed Morgans Seafood Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m).
Wicked Intent skyrocketed to the top of the Ladbrokes.com.au markets for the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 10 with an ultra-impressive four and a half length win over Mishani Honcho at Doomben on November 29.
He’s over the same track and distance as that win in the Breakfast Creek Hotel Handicap that followed his win on debut over 900m at the Gold Coast in early October.
The only other horse with a previous win on the board in the Phelan Ready Stakes field is then the Les Ross-trained Mishani Di Caprio who ran third to Wicked Intent a fortnight ago.
Before that the Teofilo gelding won back-to-back at Doomben and then the Gold Coast in November.
He was last seen crossing second to Mishani Honcho over 1200m at Doomben last Saturday and will jump from barrier one on Saturday with apprentice James Orman aboard for the short turnaround.
Also drawn nicely in barrier two is the Brad Herne-rained It’s Vegas Baby, the Beneteau gelding running second to fellow Saturday rival Mishani Di Caprio on the Gold Coast in mid-November before a winning Deagon trial at the start of the month.
It’s Vegas Baby is another Magic Millions graduate bound for the 2015 MM Classic paying $15 in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Also coming off credible last start efforts are then the Paul Butterworth-trained Wicked Investment and Craig Cousins’ Relampago both drawn wide in barriers eight and 10 respectively.
Wicked Investment has had two runs for two third place efforts so far, both of those runs being over 1050m at Doomben with the most recent seeing him beaten two and a half lengths by The Wildman on November 1.
Jet Spur gelding Relampago meanwhile was fourth to Hardline on December 5 in a 2YO Maiden over 1100m here, an effort he should be improving on after getting his debut out of the way.
Other notable hopes include Stuart Kendricks’ Apollo Hope who was runner-up behind It’s Vegas Baby in his lead-up trial and the Tony Gollan-trained Hinchinbrook colt Shipwrecked who ran sixth to Wicked Intent on debut back on October 4.
