Sweet Repeat Leads 2014 Calaway Gal Stakes Field

Ross Coveney’s in-form Toowoomba-trained filly Sweet Repeat is the headline final acceptor for the Calaway Gal Stakes 2014 field in Brisbane on Saturday.

One of a host of black-type races on the Doomben line-up this weekend, the $100,000 Listed Yatala Pies Calaway Gal Stakes (1050m) attracted a dozen two-year-old fillies that face off in Race 4.

Draw card nominee Carriages, heading towards the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast in January was the most notable non-acceptor on Wednesday.

The field then is led by Coveney’s daughter of Teranaba who shoots for her third win on the trot following victories at Toowoomba (870m) and the Sunshine Coast (1000m) this campaign.

Jason Taylor takes over for Brooke Stower for the fillies’ first stakes assignment, the duo jumping form barrier five of 12.

There are three other last start winners in the mix including the Tony Gollan-trained Supersay in gate eight for Tegan Harrison.

After a fourth on debut at Doomben behind Mishani Di Caprio on November 8, Gollan’s Rothesay filly travelled to Toowoomba and enjoyed a one length win a fortnight later over 1050m that she’ll be out to repeat back home on Saturday.

The other fillies coming off debut wins are then the Danny Bougoure-trained Flamenco Girl and Noel Doyle’s St Remy drawn at opposite ends of the field in barriers two and 11 respectively.

Michael Cahill stays on Snitzel filly Flamenco Girl after guiding her to a half-length win over Lady Sniper at the Sunshine Coast on November 2.

St Remy also travels to Brisbane from a win on the coast after saluting over 900m at the Gold Coast, her home track, on November 29.

The other non-debutants in the race are then the David Kelly-trained Star Of Night who ran second to St Remy in her first run a fortnight ago, improving Jet Spur filly Maybe Even You and Sailor Gerri for Liam Birchley.

Birchley will also saddle-up two fillies for the maiden runs with Flamenco and Sugar Hit, who ran third in a December 2 trial behind It’s Vegas Baby, in gates three and 12 respectively.
