2014 Brisbane Handicap Final Field & Barrier Draw

A final field of 15 horses will tackle the mile this Saturday at Doomben Racecourse in the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m).

Unsurprisingly, headliner Mouro has been allocated the top weight of 61kg, which is up to seven kilograms more than his 14 rivals. The Tony McEvoy-trained six-year-old is set to jump from barrier four with champion hoop Tommy Berry in the saddle.

The American bred horse got his start in France before being sold to clients of McEvoy in 2012. The entire enjoyed back-to-back wins in last year’s spring racing carnival after scoring the Sale Cup (1600m) and Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m). He then returned in the autumn of this year to win the Group 3 TAB Rewards Stakes (1400m).

This campaign he charged home to finish second in the Kingswood Handicap (1350m) on November 15 despite carrying a hefty 60kg before finishing end of the field in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) on November 29.

While McEvoy had hoped to run Mouro in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday, his performance in the Festival Stakes ruled him out and he is heading up to Brisbane instead.

Darci Be Good, Hopfgarten, and Rudy are the only three other runners set to carry more than the 54kg minimum weight.

The Andrew Williamson-trained Darci Be Good will carry 56.5kg as he jumps from barrier three with Travis Wolfgram. The six-year-old gelding is in form after finishing in the first three his last five times out, including a minor placing in the Listed Recognition Stakes (1630m) last time out before which he won two handicap races at Doomben.

Rudy won the Recognition Stakes last time out while Hopfgarten finished last; both will carry 56kg and start next to each other in barriers nine and ten.

Pat Duff’s Steel Zip has scored the inside run from barrier one with Justin P Stanley to ride while Bryan Guy’s Noisy Ocean will have to overcome a jump from the widest barrier.

Nine of the 15 runners are coming via the Recognition Stakes, which means the Brisbane Handicap is set to be a rematch.

Betting markets for the race will open at Ladbrokes.com.au shortly so make sure your online betting account is ready to go. New customers will receive up to $100 in a bonus match on their first bet.
