The Barry Mitchell-trained Magic Millions 2YO Classic favourite for next month’s $2 million feature, Wicked Intent is also the headline nominee for the Phelan Ready Stakes 2014 at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday.
An undefeated son of Wicked Style, the promising colt is one of 13 two-year-old colts and geldings nominated for this weekend’s $100,000 Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m) in Brisbane.
The set weights clash is being used by a number of eligible juveniles as a lead-up for the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 10, for which Wicked Intent is the early favourite to win.
He’s had two runs for two wins so far backing up from a 900m win at the Gold Coast on debut in October to put a massive four and a half lengths on his closest rival on November 29 in the $65,000 Breakfast Creek Hotel QTIS Handicap (1050m).
Now could now shoot for his third on the trot to secure favouritism in the 2015 Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds.
Mitchell is yet to 100% confirm the young star’s run in the Phelan Ready Stakes with a chance he could be saved for a run in the $150,000 Group 3 BJ McLachlan Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast on December 27.
Breakfast Creek Hotel Handicap third placegetter Mishani Di Caprio is also nominated for the Phelan Ready Stakes, the Les Ross-trained Teofilo gelding looking to turn the tables on Wicked Intent.
The dual winner also ran last Saturday over the 1200m at Doomben when runner-up behind Mishani Honcho in a close effort defeated only a long neck.
The next two best rated Phelan Ready Stakes entries are then the Brad Herne-trained It’s Vegas Baby and Wicked Investment for Paul Butterworth.
Beneteau gelding It’s Vegas Baby ran second on the Gold Coast last month behind Mishani De Caprio before a freshen-up, the youngster winning a Deagon trial on December 2 ahead of his second career run.
Wicked Investment meanwhile has had two runs finishing third in both over this track (Doomben) and distance (1050m), most recently finishing 2.5 lengths off The Wildman on November 1 with Chris Munce in the saddle.
Another entry with a previous run on the record is Craig Cousins’ Jet Spur gelding Relampago who debuted at the track on December 5 crossing fourth behind Hardline over 1110m, an effort he’s likely to take improvement out of.
Also in the mix are the likes of Stuart Kendrick’s unraced Starcraft colt Apollo Hope and Shipwrecked for Group 1 winning trainer Tony Gollan.
Hinchinbrook colt Shipwrecked debuted at the Gold Coast over two months ago running a distant sixth behind Wicked Intent, a run Gollan is hoping he can improve on at home over more distance with the first run done and dusted.
