2014 Mode Stakes Betting Tips

This weekend the Brisbane Summer Racing Carnival kicks up a notch for George Moore Stakes Day featuring the Mode Stakes 2014 – betting tips for the fillies’ feature found below.

Hijack Hussy

There are 14 three-year-old fillies in the field for Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Shelley Dale OHS Mode Stakes (1200m), favourite for the Doomben showdown being the Tony Gollan-trained Hijack Hussy.

She pays $2.20 through Ladbrokes.com.au to post her third straight win, the daughter of Hussonet coming off a Melbourne Cup Day victory at Flemington in the Listed Hybrid Stakes (1400m).

Michel Rodd is replaced by Timothy Bell this weekend, Bell aboard two back for her Gold Coast win that was also over 1400m.

How she handles the drop back to 1200m then will be key, but the bookies are taking no chances as she’s won one and placed second in the other of her two starts over the track and distance.

Also high up the Mode Stakes betting markets are the likes of Gollan’s rails-drawn Tina Melina ($6) and the Gillian Heinrich-trained Gold Coast raider Lush Belle ($6) who ran first and second respectively in the $65,000 Courier Mail + Members QTIS Handicap (1200m) here on November 22.

So are these first three in betting also the ones to lock into your Mode Stakes bets?

#1 Hijack Hussy ($2.20)

With a nice barrier (8) and Bell aboard think the favourite will be hard to hold off. Set weights work to her advantage and the lead-up form is ideal. Seems to be able to perform at any track and pressure is off here as opposed to her Melbourne Cup Day appearance at Flemington. Has a top record over this track and distance and has had plenty of time between runs to freshen-up. Should like being home and if she’s not too dour for the drop back to 1200m will be flying home for her third on the trot.

#4 Tina Melina ($6)

Following the order of the odds for the Mode Stakes quinella and think the Gollan stable mates will run one-two. She’ll get the run of the race from the inside alley with Tegan Harrison staying on after riding her for all three of her career starts to date. Has shown plenty of promise in those runs including back-to-back wins over the track (Doomben) and distance (1200m) so will be right up there.

#8 Rich Reward ($15)

Adding value in the placings is this Michael Nolen-trained Real Saga filly travelling from Toowoomba to the big city. She’s stakes performed at Eagle Farm in the winter, including a close fourth to Sports Edition in the Listed Hampden Stakes (1200m), so should handle the crowds without issue. In the winter she finished on a high with a 1400m win at the Sunshine Coast then resumed at Gatton late last month for another win this time over 1100m in a Class 1. Up in class for this but 1200m second-up should suit.
