You’ll Never on Trial for Villiers Stakes 2014

Chris Waller’s progressive galloper You’ll Never is on trial for a shot at the 2014 Villiers Stakes Saturday week when he runs in a handicap clash at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney this weekend.

The five-year-old Commands gelding is one of four possible hopes for Australia’s in-form trainer Chris Waller in the $175,000 Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Randwick Racecourse on December 13.

Waller already has three confirmed Villiers Stakes hopefuls and is banking on You’ll Never to win this weekend and add his name to the list.

“He’ll have to win and win well to push on to the Villiers,” Waller told The Daily Telegraph.

Festival Stakes winner I’m Imposing, third placegetter Strawberry Boy and Wyong Cup winner Multilateral are the three current Villiers Stakes representatives for Team Waller.

On Saturday You’ll Never is one of six for Waller in the $85,000 The “HQ Of Insurance” Handicap (1400m), Blake Shinn with the ride from barrier four of nine.

Winner over the 1200m at Rosehill on October 25 defeating Dothraki, You’ll Never comes off a fourth behind stable mate Heart Testa in the $85,000 Cellarbrations Kingswood Handicap (1350m) on November 15.

If successful then Waller’s plans to put him on the quick seven day back-up into the Villiers Stakes will come to fruition, the master trainer believing the horse a better chance on the short turnaround.

You’ll Never has backed-up and won twice this year during the winter, form Waller hopes will hold in better company this Sydney Summer Racing Carnival.

“He’s a good horse when backing up, which is why we’ve held him back,’’ Waller said.

While far from a Group 1 chance for the stable or connections, Waller describes You’ll Never as “a really good horse” and capable of winning in black type company.

“I think he’s a really good horse, but my terminology of a good horse is one who races consistently and does a good job for their owners,” he said.

“He’s far from a Group 1 horse, but he’s certainly up to winning a Listed or Group race.”

As for Waller’s other Villiers Stakes chances, he’s hoping for a nice run in the clash from his Mizzen Mast six-year-old Multilateral who comes off a sixth in the Festival Stakes.

Sure to appreciate extra ground, the grey is heading towards a run in the $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day, December 26.

“(He) needs to run in the Villiers if he’s to be competitive in the Summer Cup a fortnight later, but a good strong mile at Randwick might see him have a chance,” Waller said.
